StudioList - A directory of iPhone & Android developers

Right now, it’s tough for a business to connect with mobile app developers. Warb has been developing for the iPhone for over a year now, and we’ve seen the developer community grow to over 5000 studios. Lagging behind are the tools to sort through that group and find even one company that would be the right fit for a given project.

A Craigslist post for “experienced iPhone developers” might get a response of 20-30 developers. Most of these responses will be from developers that are from another country and vague in terms of pricing and experience – often unclear if they’ve even made an app before.

Try to Google that same phrase and the results aren’t much better. First you will see the dozen or so companies that are paying for advertising. This is probably a good place to start, but in the end these companies are typically only a good fit for large projects or higher budgets. You’ll also find that there are a few directories out there, however their lists are generated either by scraping info from the app store, or include everyone and their dog. This means businesses still have to do the grunt work and sort through hundreds of listings to find a professional portfolio from a company capable of completing the project within their budget.
Over three months we’ve sorted through thousands of apps, developer portfolios, and customer reviews to create a shortlist of who we think are the best developers in the world. We’re currently working with these developers to populate StudioList.org. Studios provide their location, average budget, and portfolio pieces – while our task is to enforce a high level of quality across all submissions. The goal is to create a very transparent view of what each of these developers have to offer, so that nobody wastes each other’s time.

So… what’s in it for us? We hope to eventually make some money with StudioList, but for now we’re focused on the site gaining visibility. Once we see that studios listed on our site are getting a steady flow of leads, we’ll offer them the option to pay for a premium listing which would place their portfolio above accounts listed for free.

So far, we’ve been impressed with the response to the directory. We are already at twice the amount of traffic we expected, and receiving positive reviews from both businesses and developers.
